Kurgian
The Kurgian are one of the founding and primary members of the young Federation. The Federation is a newly formed coalition of species that border the Lipdonians and Cryous. It was formed as Sayor and Kurgian rebels took advantage of a devastating war between Lipdonians and Cryous. The Kurgian were subjects of Cryous before gaining their freedom. Although not as mistreated as the Sayor, who were under their Lipdonian suppressors. The Kurgian still didn't have equal rights and were viewed by many within Cryous society as a lesser species. Kurgian were once thought to be water-dwelling creatures like Cryous. Surprisingly, though, the relationship between Cryous and the Federation isn't one filled with animosity like it is with Lipdonians. Instead, the Cryous leadership chooses to recognize the rise of the Kurgian civilization and sees the Kurgian success at gaining their freedom as a sign that they deserve it. Or at least some see it that way. The subject creates a great divide in Cryous politics. Many see the only reason the Cryous Empire didn't punish the rebels was that the Kurgian, and thus the Federation, formed a buffer zone between it and the Lipdonians.
The Kurgian see themselves as more than just a buffer, but as an old and rich civilization thriving in its newfound freedom. Because the Cryous didn't surprise their culture as much as the Lipdonian's surprised Sayor's culture, the Kurgian have a lot of knowledge about their history as a species and a people, and have found strength in celebrating who they are. However, the Sayor often sees them as cocky and finds flaunting history equally hurtful.
