The Profession skill has to do with your characters ability to acquire wealth through legal means. It includes being able to 'act professional' when in the appropriate setting even if it is against the characters normal behavior as well as being exceptional or standing out among others in the work place.
A full list of Professions can be seen here. Picking a profession may acquire skill ranks in Profession and 'moving up' in a profession (A.K.A: Getting a better credit score for your Character) may also need a better Profession score.
Having a higher Profession skill rank can also directly affect the credit score. See Special. This means that this skill is considered Rank Dependent.
Check
There are three checks that can be done for the Profession skill along one of them requires that you have a specific kind of Profession.
- Getting a Bonus
Noted on the Wealth page a check can be done to see if you are good enough at your job that you gain a bonus. The check is d20 + Profession skill against a DC of 20. If you succeed you can gain a bonus that goes directly to your Bonus Wealth. The bonus amount can be whatever the GM finds appropriate however a good suggestion is to take the Characters Credit Score and subtract 3 and take that Credit score's value as the Bonus. If you cannot subtract 3 without going below 0 then simply add $250. Another suggestion would be fore ever 5 you beat the DC by you get another Bonus.
You cannot roll for a bonus if you do not have a skill rank in Profession.
- Acting Professional
You can add your Profession to a bluff check in situations where your character must act Professional. This is a loose rule where the situation will likely not come up often and is up to the GM to decided if the conditions are right. But having ranks in Profession should give any character an edge in situations where they must act Professional while role-playing. The DC would be determined by the Bluff check.
- Performance
Your Profession has to be a form of entertainment, from singing to acting to playing an instrument. If so then then you can do a Performance as an action. The higher the rank the more money earned from a Performance and the more likely your character could become popular for there performance skills. The Character can add there Charisma Mod as a static bonus to these checks. The amount earned should be determined by the GM. But should increase based on DC and skill rank. Each of the nine categories of the Perform skill includes a variety of methods, instruments, or techniques, a small sample of which is provided for each category below.
- Act (comedy, drama, pantomime)
- Comedy (buffoonery, limericks, joke-telling)
- Dance (ballet, waltz, jig)
- Keyboard instruments (harpsichord, piano, pipe organ)
- Oratory (epic, ode, storytelling)
- Percussion instruments (bells, chimes, drums, gong)
- String instruments (fiddle, harp, lute, mandolin)
- Wind instruments (flute, pan pipes, recorder, trumpet)
- Sing (ballad, chant, melody)
Try Again
You cannot try to get a Bonus more then once a week. As for Acting Professional you should review the Bluff skill rules.
You can try a Performance again, but they don't negate previous failures, and an audience that has been unimpressed in the past is likely to be prejudiced against future performances. (Increase the DC by 5 for each previous failure.)
Special
For each rank in Profession a character can gain +1 to there Credit score and get a Bonus payout of whatever the Budget is for there new Credit score. You can find out the amount by reviewing the 'Credit Rating to Budget amount' on the Wealth page.
