Below are the rules for Hero Points. Hero Points are earned every time a Character levels up and is also a handy alternative for the GM to provide rewards for Player involvement instead of using extra experience points. Hero Points can be spent by Players to help there Characters excel at a particular action or objective. Some Species and Classes require them for the use in special features or talents.

Getting Hero Points

Normally a Character gets Hero points every time they level up. The amount of Hero Points acquired is based on the Base Class that gains a level.

Editing Character Sheet: There is currently not a location on the Character sheet to record how many Hero Points a Character has earned. This will hopefully change shortly.

The GM can also give out Hero points to Player's who have done well or was really impressive in some way. (Perhaps bought the GM pizza)

Alternative Rules

The game has Alternate rules for "Low Fantasy" and "High Fantasy" settings.

Low Fantasy
  • Hero points earned are half what they are normally.
  • Hero's are limited to only one point per day.
Extremely Low Fantasy
  • There are no Hero points. Talents that require hero points are either twice as hard to preform (DC checks are higher) or have 1/2 the effect.
High Fantasy
  • Hero's do not gain points every level. Instead they have a pool of points equal to how much they would have gotten at each level. This pool regenerates 1 hero point per 8 hours of rest the character has.

Spending Hero Points

A Character can spend a Hero point to preform the following things:

  • Improve the chances on a d20 roll used to make attack, a skill check, an ability check, a level check, or a saving throw.
  • Use a class talent or class feature during your turn.
  • Used in conjunction with certain skill features.

A Character cannot spend more the one Hero point per type of action. A character cannot spend more action points then 1/2 their character level rounded up between resting periods.

Improve d20 roll

To improve a roll the Player rolls a d20 twice and takes the higher one. The Player cannot spend more points on the same d20. The Player must declare they are going to use this action point before rolling.

Class Talent

When a Player declares that their Character will attempt to use a talent that requires a Hero point they have to mark the point off the Character sheet.

Hero Points and Skills

Hero points can be used to roll a skill check twice. They can also be used to provide a +4 bonus to take 10 and +8 bonus to take 20 on skill checks that allow taking time instead of rolling.

Some skills have special features for use with Hero Points and are meant to be used as a game mechanic for the Players to help them along when they are seriously stuck. This should help alleviate some of the feeling of a GM 'coddling' or helping along the Players as the Players still had to 'pay' with something that they could of used elsewhere. For example it could be used to help find the clue or secret passage when they shouldn't of because the roll was too low. (But they need to in order to continue the plot).
